1948 Spartan Camper, Retro Gorge Getaway

Inside, The 48 is midcentury-modern and cozy. The table converts to a queen-size bed with a 6" mattress and topper, and the little galley has an induction cooktop and microwave, with coffee and tea supplied. A tankless water heater means long, hot showers, and twin heat-and-AC units keep it comfortable in any season. WiFi in an all-aluminum camper is normally a losing battle, so we hardwired an access point right inside for reliable indoor signal, with a mesh network covering the rest of the property. Just outside is your own firepit — firewood is available just up the road — plus a propane grill and a picnic table. It's a true small space and proud of it: about 6 feet of interior height, a snug bathroom, and a compact toilet nook. Roomy and comfortable for two (or 4 with the table turned into a bed!), just not the right fit if you shop big & tall. The 48 sits at the end of our holler, genuinely tucked away. The only home nearby is ours: the Huxley House, our steampunk-themed confection, about 100 feet away. We're putting up a wood privacy fence between the two, and we keep Huxley's firepit tucked behind that house so each stay keeps its own space. We own the land behind The 48, and the one other house close by is abandoned and slowly returning to the hillside — so it stays quiet out here. You might still meet a friendly free-range dog wandering through. Traveling as a group? Book both and take the whole corner of the holler. A little history: your camper is a genuine 1948 Spartan, built by the Spartan Aircraft Company of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Founded in 1928 by oil baron William Skelly and later owned by oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, Spartan built airplanes first — the sleek Spartan Executive, Navy trainers, and parts for B-17 and B-24 bombers during WWII. When the war ended, Getty turned all that aircraft know-how to travel trailers, riveting them from aircraft-grade aluminum the same monocoque way Spartan built fuselages. The result was the "Cadillac of trailers": pricier, better-built, and far scarcer than Airstream — a company Spartan actually predates. Yours has been lovingly renovated inside and out.
